Eyelid correction plastic surgery is known as Blepharoplasty in medical parlance. Eyelid surgery basically involves correcting droopy eyelids. With age, our eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them become weak. This may result in excess fat gathering around eyelids resulting in droopy or saggy upper eyelids and bags under lower eyelids. The eyes are the most important aesthetic component of the face - for this reason eyelid surgery is among the most efficient ways to obtain significant aesthetic improvement to the face with relatively light surgery.
When should you go for Eyelid Surgery?
Droopiness, sagginess or heaviness of the upper eyelid can can take away all the charm from your otherwise beautiful face. Apart from the aesthetic element, saggy or heavy eyelid can also restrict your field of vision and can cause eye fatigue. You may find it difficult to keep your eyes open for longer periods of time causing problems with even mundane tasks like reading a book or driving a car.
Heavy or saggy eyelids can also cause the following problem:
-
In women, it can cause problems while applying makeup on eyelashes.
-
It can make you look older than you really are.
You should go for Blepharoplasty if you have:
-
Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
-
Excess skin on your upper eyelids that interferes with your peripheral vision
-
Excess skin on the lower eyelids
-
Bags under your eyes
Treatment
Blepharoplasty is a common treatment of drooping or heavy eyelids. It aims to restore the correct functioning of the affected eyelid(s) and restores the aesthetic symmetry of the eye region of your face. This is achieved by removing excess skins from the eyelid and smoothening or tightening the underlying eye muscles. Whether excess skin is to be removed or excess fat, depends on the plastic surgeon who decides the right procedure after thorough analysis of the eyelids.
Blepharoplasty surgery usually requires about 1-3 hours and can be done in an out-patient setting.
Surgery for Upper Eyelids
For upper eyelids, the surgery is done by making incisions along the natural fold lines of the eyelid. Since upper eyelids have more skin and lot of natural fold lines, there are little to no chances of any scar marks being visible after the surgery.
Surgery for Lower Eyelid
For lower eyelids the incision is done just below the lower eye lashes. The incision marks in lower eyelids surgery is often masked with laser treatment, since lower eyelids don’t have as much natural fold lines.Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty technique allows cutting and removal of excess fat from the lower eyelid without leaving a visible scar but it doesn’t allow for removal of excess skin.
Post Treatment Recovery
Full recovery from eyelid surgery may take several weeks and the final, stable result of the correction procedure may take several months. However you can proceed with your normal daily routine in a few days time.
After 7 days: You can read, watch television, use computer/laptop
After 10 days: get back to work
After 14 days: you can use contact lenses
After 21 days: you can exercise, bend, lift or cry
