Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgery to increase breast size. It involves placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles. For some women, breast augmentation is a way to feel more confident. For others, it's part of rebuilding the breast for various conditions. Breast augmentation surgery can restore breast volume lost after pregnancy or drastic weight loss.

Why Is Breast Augmentation Done?

Breast augmentation is normally done to:

  • Increase the size of small or underdeveloped breasts

  • Increase the size of one breast to make it look like the other

  • Increase the size and appearance of breasts after pregnancy or due to old age

  • Enhance one’s physical appearance by making breasts more prominent

  • Enhance one’s self confidence

It is best to discuss your goals for breast augmentation with your surgeon to ensure you have realistic expectations from the procedure.

What Is A Breast Implant?

A breast implant is a prosthesis that is used for breast augmentation surgery and artificially enhances the shape and size of the breast. 2 types of breast implants are commonly used in breast augmentation based on the filler material - saline breast implants and silicone breast implants.

Saline breast implant has a silicone shell filled with saline solution. In case the shell leaks, the saline solution is naturally absorbed in the body.

Silicone breast implants have the same same silicone shell filled with viscous silicone gel. Silicone implant is the most popular and common choice for most breast augmentation surgeries.

Preparing for Breast Augmentation Surgery

1. Consultation with Surgeon

If you are concerned about your breast size and as a result have low self confidence, the first thing to do is fix up an appointment with Dr. Sharath at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. Our breast augmentation specialist will answer all your questions and concerns and help you have a realistic expectation from the breast enhancement procedure. You will be explained the procedure and asked about your size requirements. You will also be asked about your medical history and may have to undergo routine tests to assess your preparedness for anesthesia.

2. Preoperative Evaluation

In the second stage your routine test reports will be evaluated, your breasts will be examined and clinical pictures will be taken. The breast augmentation procedure will be explained to you in details. You will also have to choose the correct size of breast implants and fill out pre operation forms.

3. Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery is done in outpatient setting. The surgery takes 1-2 hours and in most cases, the patient is released on the same day.

The surgery starts with you being given anesthesia. You might be given general anesthesia, meaning you will be sleeping throughout the operation, or local anesthesia, i.e. you will be awake during the operation, but you won’t feel your breasts while they are being operated on.

The next step is making incisions on your breasts. Your surgeon will decide the right place for making incisions. Incisions are generally done along the edge of the areolas, the fold under the breast and in the armpit.

The next step involves inserting and placing the breast implants in their right positions. Your surgeon will decide the method of inserting the implants based on various factors.

Finally, the incisions made earlier will be closed.

4. Post Surgery Recovery

Immediately after surgery you will be taken to recovery area for close monitoring. If everything remains fine you will be discharged in couple of hours.

After surgery you might have to wear compression bandage or sports bra for extra comfort and to help keep the implants in place. You might also be asked to take pain medication. You will also experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks.

After a week’s time you can resume light work or start going to work.

After a month you can resume all normal activities, except upper body exercise and weight lifting for which you should weight for 6-7 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

At which age is it safe to have breast augmentation surgery?

Saline implants are suitable for women of 18 years or older, while silicone implants are suitable for women who are 22 years or older.

Are silicone breast implants safe?

While there are risks associated with silicone implants (for example rupture), it is generally considered safe for use and no study till now has associated silicone implants with any disease.

What will happen if the silicone implant gets ruptured?

Rupture of silicone implants is very difficult to notice as silicone is viscous in nature . If the silicone implant shell breaks or leaks, the leaking silicone may spread around the breast tissue. However modern silicone implants have thicker gel and even after rupture stay in place. In any case, the implant will have to be removed from the breasts after rupture.

Do implants have an expiry date? How long can they stay in my body?

Breast implants generally last 10-15 years, unless there is some damage to the implants or there is some change in shape, in which case you have to do revision surgery to get the issue sorted.

What are the risks associated with Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are a few risks associated with breast augmentation. One of them, as explained above is implant leakage or rupture. Capsular contracture is another breast implant related complication. It is basically a capsule of scar tissue around breast implant and is human body’s response to the presence of a foreign object in the body. Other risks of breast augmentation surgery include breast pain, infection and changes in nipple and breast sensation.

I have sagging breasts. Should I go for breast augmentation surgery?

If saggy breasts is your only issue then you don’t need breast augmentation. You should go for breast lift (mastopexy) surgery. Breast augmentation won’t lift your breasts up, it will just increase their size. However, in many cases, saggy breasts are also undersized. In such cases it is recommended to go for both breast lift and breast enhancement procedure to get the ideal result.

How big can my breasts become after breast enhancement?

While it may be tempting for some to go for a drastic increase in breast size, it is not recommended. Inserting too big silicone implants may stretch your skin too much or put too much pressure on the implants, causing rupture or may just look unnatural and defeat the whole purpose of breast augmentation. You surgeon will recommend the ideal implant size after examining your breast to make sure after augmentation they look natural and beautiful. Generally speaking, an increase of one or two cup sizes is generally considered safe.

Will breast enhancement affect breastfeeding?

In most cases breast augmentation doesn’t hamper breastfeeding as glandular tissues in breasts remain intact after surgery. However in some rare cases breastfeeding can become a challenge, if other complications like capsular contracture arise after breast enhancement surgery.

What if I don’t like the results after surgery?

In almost all cases women look and feel very good after a successful breast enhancement. It boosts their self confidence and makes them happy. However, if in a rare occurrence, you don’t like how your breasts look and feel, you can simply get the breast implants removed with a simple surgery.
